Fakulta umění a designu

na Univerzitě Jana Evangelisty Purkyně (UJEP) v Ústí nad Labem

Jsme uměleckou a designérskou školou s respektem k dějinám umění, filozofii
a vědě jako tradičním akademickým hodnotám.

About Us

We are an art and design school with respect for art history, philosophy and science as traditional academic values.

We connect studio studies with theoretical disciplines and with exhibition, presentation and publication activities, thus creating a complex creative environment full of inventive, artistic and research activities.

At the same time, we play an active role as an academic institution in the social space not only of our home town of Ústí nad Labem, but also in the national and international context.

Study

Students study in a total of sixteen specialised studios focused on art and design education. Studio teaching is very specific and characterized by an individual approach. Your studies with us will be based mainly on intensive communication with the head studio teachers.

Of course, your activities are free to extend beyond the classroom. You'll get involved in art projects, workshops and exhibitions and benefit from a naturally friendly atmosphere. However, you won't avoid theoretical and artistic reflection in the form of publications.

One of our studios is designed for foreign students within the framework of the follow-up Master's programme and is taught in English.

Why to Study at the Faculty

Within the Fine Art and Design study programmes, we provide a comprehensive artistic, theoretical and practical education for designers and graphic artists, photographers, digital media artists and contemporary art curators.

We preserve and develop traditional artistic craft practices and techniques. But we are also looking for ways to explore new technologies that use the possibilities of artistic creation not only to reflect but also to co-determine current trends based on scientific knowledge and trends shaping the contemporary, so-called creative society.

We believe that art can and should inspiringly shape not only the imagination and depth of life on the traditionally aesthetic plane, but also on the scientific and technological plane; that art can develop, together with science, new approaches to understanding the world that are not only based on exact calculations, but also on dimensions that cannot be measured. We believe that contemporary art and design have enough energy to cultivate social life, environment and atmosphere.

We create and support an international environment for students and teachers in the form of foreign internships, exchange visits, workshops, lectures and exhibitions of prominent foreign designers, artists and theorists. We cooperate with schools, institutions, galleries and design studios not only in Europe, but also in Asia and America.

Many of our graduates have already demonstrated through their work, which has been appreciated both at home and abroad, the unmistakable energy of the young artistic centre of Northwest Bohemia that our faculty has become during its existence. Students, applicants and also the general public have the opportunity to try out studying at the Faculty of Art and Design in the form of weekly workshops that take place during our Summer School.

Science and Research

We learn and work in an unmissable, newly renovated building on the university campus. The individual studios have quality facilities for their activities, including a number of specialised workplaces focused on the latest digital technologies.

But we do not forget about classical technologies either (audiovisual studio, digital printing centre or 3D printing, traditional graphic design workshops, workshops for wood, metal, glass and textile processing).

In the unique porcelain and ceramics production centre in Dubí at Teplice, we continue the regional industrial history. We cooperate with important cultural institutions abroad and throughout the Czech Republic.

We built a university cultural and social centre called Dům umění Ústí nad Labem from a former cafeteria. Here we organize artistic, educational and social events.

Awards

Our students and graduates win awards in national and international competitions and exhibition projects: Red Dot Design Award, Czech Grand Design, Cena Jindřicha Chalupeckého (Jindřich Chalupecký Award), Essl Art Award EEE, Národní cena za studentský design (Czech International Student Design Award), Master of Crystal or Designblok. Every other year we also give our own prestigious EXIT AWARD to students of art universities and academies in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
